1952
Smith Power Product’s story reaches back to 1952 as C.L. Smith began his career in Wichita Kansas with Diesel Equipment Company, a distributor for G.M. Diesel as a service technician. In 1965 the family acquired controlling interest in the company. Diesel Equipment grew steadily, the foundation being the strength of its parts and service activity, serving principally oil field, transportation, and agriculture, which we still emphasize today.
1978
In 1978 the C.L. Smith family sold its ownership in Kansas and acquired the AOR of Abbott G.M. Diesel. Smith G.M. Power evolved serving all or parts of this five state area including Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada and Oregon. This transportation, agriculture, tourism and power generation also lent itself to the requirements of unquestionable parts and service capabilities.
1985
In 1985 M.B. Smith acquired ownership of the company thereby Smith Detroit Diesel-Allison evolved. 1991 they purchased the Nevada operations from Sierra Detroit Diesel. With that acquisition brought forth employees of great character and tremendous growth opportunities in mining.
1990
The 90’s brought significant growth and profitability despite many economic challenges, including a fire at the Salt Lake City facility in December 1992. Through the timeless efforts of the employees and significant customer loyalty the decade ended with a new state of the art facility in Salt Lake City in November 2000.
2004
In 2004 Smith proudly accepted the challenge of representing the GE Power & Water Jenbacher product line for Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico and the Country of Mexico. This additional product line has given Smith Power Products the opportunity to broaden our power generation market impact by selling and supporting gas fueled prime power applications. In 2005, to better represent our total business, philosophy, and product representation, Smith Detroit Diesel-Allison, Inc became Smith Power Products, Inc., also in 2005 we purchased Sierra Freightliner Sterling Western Star, Inc., a heavy duty truck franchise in Reno/Sparks, Nevada.
2014
In 2014, approximately 360 strong (including Freightliner/Western Star dealership and Energy Group)with facilities in Salt Lake City and Vernal, Utah, Rock Spring, Wyoming, Boise, Idaho, Elko and Sparks, Nevada along with service technicians in Montana, and sales and marketing in Spokane, Washington, proudly representing the products of GE Power & Water Jenbacher, Detroit Diesel, MTU, Allison Transmission Division, and Deutz Corporation, Freightliner, Sterling and Western Star heavy duty trucks, plus many other associated lines…Serving an impressive customer base, we support significant mining entities both surface and underground, major oil field drilling contractors and servicing companies, some of the country’s premier transportation companies, various City, County, State and Federal agencies.
