About Smith Power Products
We run off the timeless efforts of our employees and significant customer loyalty
Smith Power Product’s story reaches back to 1952 as C.L. Smith began his career in Wichita Kansas with Diesel Equipment Company, a distributor for G.M. Diesel as a service technician. In 1965 the family acquired controlling interest in the company. Diesel Equipment grew steadily, the foundation being the strength of its parts and service activity, serving principally oil field, transportation, and agriculture, which we still emphasize today.
In 1978 the C.L. Smith family sold its ownership in Kansas and acquired the AOR of Abbott G.M. Diesel. Smith G.M. Power evolved serving all or parts of this five state area including Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada and Oregon. This transportation, agriculture, tourism and power generation also lent itself to the requirements of unquestionable parts and service capabilities.
In 1985 M.B. Smith acquired ownership of the company thereby Smith Detroit Diesel-Allison evolved. 1991 they purchased the Nevada operations from Sierra Detroit Diesel. With that acquisition brought forth employees of great character and tremendous growth opportunities in mining.
The 90’s brought significant growth and profitability despite many economic challenges, including a fire at the Salt Lake City facility in December 1992. Through the timeless efforts of the employees and significant customer loyalty the decade ended with a new state of the art facility in Salt Lake City in November 2000.
In 2004 Smith proudly accepted the challenge of representing the GE Power & Water Jenbacher product line for Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico and the Country of Mexico. This additional product line has given Smith Power Products the opportunity to broaden our power generation market impact by selling and supporting gas fueled prime power applications. In 2005, to better represent our total business, philosophy, and product representation, Smith Detroit Diesel-Allison, Inc became Smith Power Products, Inc., also in 2005 we purchased Sierra Freightliner Sterling Western Star, Inc., a heavy duty truck franchise in Reno/Sparks, Nevada.
